Devotional: Seeking God's Kingdom First

A companion to The Liturgy of Politics two-part sermon series

Scripture Focus:
“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” – Matthew 6:33

Reflection
Our practices shape us deeply, influencing not only what we think and believe but also whom we love and fear. This Sunday’s sermon reminds us that both spiritual and cultural "liturgies" (repeated practices) mold our hearts and minds. The world, especially through politics, often tries to teach us what to love, who to fear, and where to place our trust. But Jesus calls us to seek the Kingdom of God first and to let our hearts be shaped by practices that draw us closer to Him.

In Matthew 6, Jesus urges us not to worry about what we will eat, drink, or wear. His point goes beyond daily needs: Jesus is asking us to let go of our anxieties about survival and security, knowing that our Heavenly Father is aware of our needs. This trust in God provides a peace that isn’t shaken by the fears often stoked by culture or politics.

The key to ordering our loyalties rightly is consistency in spiritual disciplines. Faith grows as we engage in practices like prayer, scripture reading, worship, and fellowship. These habits gradually form our hearts to trust God deeply, helping us experience peace and security that no worldly system can provide.

Reflection Questions

  1. Ordering Loyalties: What are some areas where you notice divided loyalties in your life? Do you find yourself influenced more by political or cultural messages than by God’s truth?

  2. Practices and Formation: Reflect on your daily or weekly habits. Are there practices that draw you closer to God, or are some shaping your fears and anxieties instead?

  3. Trusting God with Security: Jesus says not to worry about our basic needs, as our Heavenly Father knows what we need. What would it look like for you to trust God more in areas where you feel anxious or uncertain?

Ideas for Further Study

  • Study Matthew 6:25-34: Reflect on how Jesus frames anxiety and faith. How does Jesus’ teaching here contrast with cultural or political messages about security and survival?

  • Examine Colossians 3:1-4: Paul speaks about setting our hearts on things above, not on earthly things. How can this passage encourage you to focus on eternal values and let go of earthly fears?

  • Read Ephesians 6:10-18: This passage on the armor of God provides insight into spiritual readiness. Consider how engaging in spiritual practices like prayer and reading scripture strengthens us against cultural pressures.

Prayer Prompt
Spend a few minutes each day asking God to help you seek His Kingdom first. Pray for the grace to trust Him for your safety and security and to love others even when they see the world differently. Seek His guidance in maintaining practices that shape your heart towards peace, faith, and love.

Practical Steps

  1. Limit Media Exposure: Consider setting boundaries on your intake of political or cultural media. Instead, fill that time with reading scripture, praying, or listening to worship music.

  2. Practice Gratitude: Reflect each day on God’s provision and care. Start a gratitude journal to reinforce trust in God’s goodness.

  3. Engage in Community: Seek out fellowship opportunities with other believers. Share what God is teaching you and encourage each other to focus on eternal values over worldly concerns.

By anchoring our hearts in God’s promises and practices, we can navigate a world full of conflicting messages, finding peace and purpose in Christ alone.
